Injector Metering Rail 1 Pressure - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range - Most Severe Level
CODES:
Fault Code: 449
PID(P), SID(S): P157
SPN: 157
FMI: 0/0
Lamp: Red
REASON: The engine control module (ECM) has detected that fuel pressure is higher than the commanded pressure.
EFFECT: Engine power derate.
Circuit Description:
The gear pump draws fuel from the fuel tank through the suction side fuel filter. The fuel flows through the pressure fuel filter and fuel shutoff valve to the fueling and timing actuators and the rail fuel pressure sensor. The regulator controls the fuel pressure in the fuel rail, which supplies fuel to the actuators.
Component Location:
The high-pressure fuel pump is mounted to the gear housing. The fuel pump actuator is mounted on the fuel pump. The fuel pressure sensor is mounted in the high pressure fuel rail. The fuel pressure relief valve is mounted on the high pressure fuel rail.
Conditions for Running the Diagnostics:
This diagnostic runs continuously when the keyswitch is in the ON position or when the engine is running.
Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) detected the measured fuel rail pressure was above the commanded fuel rail pressure by a calibrated limit.
Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active:
• The ECM illuminates the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp and/or the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) immediately when the diagnostic runs and fails.
Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code:
• To validate the repair, perform a key cycle, start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute.
• The fault code status displayed by the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent will change to INACTIVE immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
• The ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
• The "Reset All Faults" command in the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent can be used to clear active and inactive faults.
Shop Talk:
Possible causes of this fault code include:
• A malfunctioning fuel rail pressure sensor
This fault code may also be triggered by a sudden and significant loss of fuel pressure in the fuel system.
