#Purpose
The J1939 Receive Communication Status Test function allows the current
status of the J1939 communications received from the ECM to be diagnosed.
This is a test for J1939 messages that are expected to be received by the
ECM. All other messages and data link traffic will not be included in this test.
The data is updated approximately every five seconds.
#Accessing
1). Connect CAT ET Software to diagnostic port on the Engine. Read More: How to Connecting Caterpillar ET Software to the ECM.
2). Select Diagnostic Tests from the Diagnostics menu.

3). Select J1939 Receive Communication Status from the submenu. Click Start.

#Screen Layout
The J1939 Receive Communication Status screen has the following areas:

a). Instructions Area
The J1939 Receive Communication Status instruction area gives an explanation
for the diagnostic test.
b). Display Area
The J1939 Receive Communication Status display area has two columns:
- Description – Lists the J1939 devices in alphabetical order.
- State – Lists the status of the J1939 device. Possible states are:
- Receiving – Displayed if the J1939 device has normal conditions and the messages are received by the ECM.
- Not Receiving – Displayed if the J1939 device has sent messages to the ECM since powering up and is no longer sending required messages. This state indicates a possible problem.
- Detected – Displayed if the J1939 device has sent one messages to the ECM at start up and no further message are required.
